Rabbit Crisis in San Jose The Story of the Rabbits
An alliance of rabbit rescue groups are teaming up to work together on a large scale rescue of many domestic rabbits who have been abandoned in the San Jose area. Over a hundred domestic rabbits have been dumped and allowed to breed out of control, causing a horrible overpopulation problem. These domestic rabbits, left to fend on their own, have been subject to predation by wild animals and cruel humans. Many of the rabbits have been injured, abused or killed, and rescuers were horrified to find bodies of domestic rabbits littering the area where most of the rabbits had been dumped.
A reward fund has been established for information that leads to the arrest of a pregnant female rabbit who was shot during efforts to rescue her. More information will be forthcoming about the reward fund being set up for "Wish", the bunny who lost her life to a needless act of cruelty.
The rabbit rescue efforts were originally started by Lily Lee, a South Bay rabbit advocate. The growing alliance of rescues and animal welfare agencies now includes The Rabbit Haven, Saveabunny, North Star Rescue, Harvest Home and Team FUR with more agencies expected to join the effort in the following weeks.
To further complicate matters, rescue efforts are being hindered by San Jose's school district who has refused to cooperate with rabbit rescues and originally opposed the removal of the stray rabbits. Rescue groups are working actively to meet high liability insurance requirements and restrictions imposed by the school district.
Rescue groups urgently need the support of the public to help save these rabbits. If you can donate money towards veterinary bills, foster a bunny (or two, or three), adopt a bunny (or two, or three), volunteer your time to help round up stray rabbits, transport rabbits for a rescue group, or have any services you think would help us save these poor bunnies, please contact one of the associated rescue groups immediately.
