Reasons to Adopt
Save a life, Adopt! When you adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue, you are not only saving the life of that animal but helping to make room for another life to be saved in turn.
Know the personality! When you adopt an animal from a shelter or rescue that has plenty of hands on time with that animal you can get a clear picture of your new family additon, making the chances of a compatible fit much more likely. More well matched pets and owners means less pets getting put to sleep. Mismatched pets and owners are the number one reason animals end up in a pound.
Get a socialized animal! When you adopt an animal that has had plenty of time being handled and played with you highly decrease your chances of bringing home an animal that bites. These animals are in turn happier, healthier pets that aren't stressed by being an environment full of giant humans that they're afraid of.
Options! Because there are so many small animals that need homes you can find your perfect pet with a little bit of searching or asking around. When you go into a pet store for a new mouse, you're very likely to find a cage full of white feeder mice that have never been touched. When you contact a rescue they can help you find your ideal pet. If you want a couple active mice to watch romp and play, a cuddle rat to hang out in your lap and watch tv, or a guinea pig for your children to play with, you can find them through a rescue or shelter.
Affordability! Many pet stores will charge quite alot of money for an animal so that they can turn a profit off of the cost of feeding and care. When you adopt a rescue animal, you will often pay less to save a life then you will to line the pockets of a retail chain. A rescue animal is worth every dollar spent, and you can spend the extra money on more chew snacks. As an example, your average pet store will charge between $45 - $65 for a guinea pig who may be sick, pregnant, or unsocialized. Your average rescue will charge you $20 for a guinea pig who has been vet checked, socialized, is completely healthy, and sure not to be pregnant.
Set an Example! Help look out for homeless pets by setting an example for future generations. By adopting a pet from a rescue or shelter, you are teaching children a lesson in compassion. Children whose families adopt pets are more likely to concider adoption as a first option. Adopting one pet sets the trend, you'll be saving more lives in the end.
